How to Make Compliance Training Exciting and Fun

    By Vinay Samuel | E-learning, Enterprise Learning | Comments are Closed | 17 April, 2023 | 0

Can compliance training be made more enjoyable and less tiresome, or will it always be seen as “grudge training” that employees must endure?

Let us look at some of the ideas that can make compliance training more exciting and engaging.

    • Raise Awareness about the Training

Compliance is a team effort. It requires everyone in your organisation right from the top management to the employees to adhere to the compliance policies.

While this may seem obvious, many businesses must include it in their compliance awareness plan. Consider the following best practices for establishing employee awareness of your compliance policies:

    • Determine what message you want to send and to whom: For example, when it comes to compliance, management, and employees play distinct roles. Along with adhering to compliance policies, managers must ensure that employees are always compliant.
    • Determine the Appropriate Time: With several corporate initiatives occurring throughout the year, ensuring that your compliance and ethics program does not conflict with any other event is critical.
    • Change up your communication methods: Some people use different modes of communication. As a result, using various forms of media to raise employee awareness of your policies is the best way to do so. Some people may be more at ease with posters, while others prefer emails.

    • Microlearning

Most firms have a set deadline for completing their compliance training. This is frequently due to certification requirements or training time constraints. It can be overwhelming with many topics that need to be covered by a specific deadline. This is where microlearning can be very useful.

Microlearning techniques can boost retention rates, encourage behavioral change, and improve employee engagement.

Micro-learning employs short, bite-size learning nuggets ranging from two to seven minutes. Each module focuses on a specific subject and result. Informative nuggets can be delivered as standalone modules or as a chain of interconnected modules.

How to use microlearning approach in compliance training?

You can use the microlearning-based approach to create higher-impact training through the following two approaches:

    1. For the primary compliance courses: Use the variety of microlearning’s available formats to provide exciting classes and encourage ongoing learning.
    2. Support/add to the primary compliance courses: Utilize the microlearning strategy’s main power to:
    • Connect with the learners before the formal compliance training
    • Provide room for reinforcement or practice
    • Establish “communities of compliance practice” to maintain the compliance emphasis and keep the learners alert

    • Gamification

Gamification can pack much information into a pleasing interface. Learners can play a virtual game or compete in a competition in a way that improves their user experience and perception of your company and course materials.

Gamification brings fun and healthy competition to the learning process. Learners will feel more driven to finish their course if there is fast feedback, a leaderboard, and badges.

    Compliance Training Gamification Example

Example: Gamification In Compliance Training: Win The Access Code Game

A gamified learning journey where the learner is immersed in the content by choosing an avatar and travelling from one location to another in an office space.

The learner, on successfully attempting an activity at the end of each location, was provided with an access card to move to the next location.

    • Scenario Based Learning

The compliance mandate is typically to achieve adherence to guidelines/processes or to bring about a change in behavior. Scenario-based learning can be used very effectively to influence conformance and significantly impact changes in thinking/behavior.

Scenario-based training incorporating real-world experiences allows your audience to blend the virtual world with on-the-job applications. We must bridge the gap between the training experience and the on-the-job application to achieve a specific behavioral change.

    Scenario Based Training Example

    Example: Combating Bribery in Business

Objective: Build integrated compliance training on bribery and its impact on business.

    • Posed a narrative scenario replicating real-life experiences through a visually intuitive format (comic strip approach).
    • Checked the application of the concepts using questions related to the scenario while validating if the learning triggers the desired behavioral change.

Impact: We met the desired behavioral change mandate due to highly relatable learning, providing a clear understanding of the consequences of non-compliance (for the individual as well as the organization).

    Conclusion

Future e-learning programs to impart compliance training will likely employ the following strategies:

    • Video-Based learning
    • Gamification
    • Scenario-based learning

Video-based online training programs keep compliance courses interesting, and gamification helps prevent learner monotony. Scenario-based learning gives learners a relatable and highly relevant learning experience.
